General Characteristics
ERNiFeCr-2 is a precipitation-hardening nickel-based filler metal. It is the matching consumable for Inconel 718, designed so the weld deposit responds to the same solution and age heat treatment as the 718 base material.
Conventional solid-solution nickel filler metals could not reach the full strength level of precipitation hardened Inconel 718 after welding. It achieves high strength together with excellent cryogenic toughness after proper post-weld heat treatment, making it ideal for gas turbine hot-section components, high-pressure wellhead parts, downhole tools and cryogenic structural weldments.
Compared to ERNiCrMo-3 and ERNiCrMo-4, ERNiFeCr-2 produces precipitation hardenable weld metal whose final strength depends on post weld heat treatment, while ERNiCrMo-3/4 are applied in the as-welded state for corrosion service. Compared to ERNiCrCoMo-1, ERNiFeCr-2 is the dedicated matching filler for Inconel 718, while ERNiCrCoMo-1 is used for higher-temperature turbine alloys.

Q1: What base metal is matched by ERNiFeCr-2 (wire/rod) and ENiFeCr-2 covered electrode?
A1: Primary matching alloy is Inconel 718 (UNS N07718). ERNiFeCr-2 includes solid welding wire and bare welding rod to AWS A5.14; ENiFeCr-2 is the SMAW covered electrode under AWS A5.11. Both used for joining 718 base metal and dissimilar joints with other nickel alloys or stainless steels.
Q2: Is post weld heat treatment required for ERNiFeCr-2 wire/rod or ENiFeCr-2 electrode welds?
A2: Yes. ERNiFeCr-2 / ENiFeCr-2 are precipitation hardening filler metals. To achieve full strength, the welded assembly must undergo solution treatment followed by age hardening, same as Inconel 718 base metal. Weld in as-welded condition has low strength.
Q3: What limits on interpass temperature during welding? Any SMAW special notes?
A3: Interpass temperature should be kept below 100°C to prevent overaging and detrimental phase precipitation. Rigorous pre-weld cleaning is mandatory. ENiFeCr-2 covered electrodes require proper baking before SMAW to minimise hydrogen risk.
Q4: Can ERNiFeCr-2 / ENiFeCr-2 welds be used at cryogenic temperatures?
A4: Yes. Properly heat-treated weld metal maintains excellent toughness at cryogenic service.
Q5: What shielding gas should I use for wire/rod? What for covered electrode?
A5: GTAW: pure argon. GMAW: pure argon is recommended; oxidizing gas mixtures are not advised. ENiFeCr-2 SMAW covered electrode uses flux shielding, no external gas supply.
Q6: What inspection and certification options exist?
A6: Standard MTC with heat analysis and weld deposit mechanical data.
